All over the State Capital and its environs disposal of waste has since became a very big problem in the State and has contributed a very serious nuisance evident in its polluting nature. Most of our streets in Uyo and others have been overtaken by refuse and the people living in such vicinity are exposed to the hazards caused by the polluting nature of these waste.
The Vintage express is of the opinion that inasmuch as there is currently a seeming challenge on where refuses to be dump, the Government of the day should as a matter of necessity establish a place where these refuse are disposed.
The economic importance of refuse cannot be overemphasized and if the ministry of environment with the ministry of science and technology would want to make good use of these refuse, appropriate mechanisms should be put in place to ensure the recycling of these refuse so that they could be used for something meaningful for the society.
The Vintage Express believes that employment opportunities abound in this case and the earlier the Government realizes this, the better for both the economy and social well-being of Akwa Ibom People. Invariably refers that if these refuse are channeled into something meaningful, our environment will be mosquitoes and other health carrying diseases free.
Although keeping our environment clean is not the duty of only the Government, the Government should institute a policy that will checkmate this illegal disposition of waste on our streets, by the way we are going we might end up inflicting much disease on our people.
If the Government institutes a policy of checking indiscriminate dumping of refuse on gutters, roadsides and some streets, we will live in a State where our health will be safe guarded.
Our perpetual exposure to the refuse surrounding us is killing our organs silently and it is on this background that The Vintage Express calls on everyone, and organizations, political institutions, social institutions, religious institutions and the private sector to join hands with the Government to move this state forward away from illegal refuse dumping. Streets like Udobio by Itiam Junction, EffiongEno, NEPA Line and others are eyesore to this challenge and it is left for us to fight this dreaded action to a stand still, the Government will lead while we follow. It is our belief that once we are able to arrest indiscriminate waste Disposal, our society and State in general will benefit.
